A hidden water leak rarely announces itself. There’s no dramatic burst pipe, no puddle on the kitchen floor — just small, easy-to-miss clues that build up until the damage is already done. By the time most homeowners spot a leak, it’s often been running for weeks or even months.

1. Your Water Bill Has Crept Up for No Reason
If your usage hasn’t changed but your bill has jumped, that’s one of the clearest early indicators of a hidden leak. Even a slow drip can waste hundreds of litres a month without ever appearing as visible water.
What to do: Compare your last 2-3 bills. A steady, unexplained rise is worth investigating.
2. You Hear Water Running When Everything’s Off
If you can hear a faint trickling or running water sound when every tap, appliance, and toilet is switched off, there’s a good chance water is moving somewhere it shouldn’t be — often behind a wall or under a floor.
What to do: Turn everything off, go quiet, and listen near suspected areas. Water under timber or suspended floors is often audible before it’s visible.

Yellow or brown staining on ceilings and walls, peeling paint, or a persistent musty smell — especially in one specific area — usually means moisture is present somewhere it shouldn’t be, even if you can’t see the source.
